Finger Tape Alternatives

For decades, the answer to a sore or fragile finger has been the same: a roll of tape. It works, but it is not the only option anymore. Here is an honest comparison of the three ways athletes support their fingers today, so you can pick the one that fits your sport.

1. Classic finger tape

The roll of tape is everywhere, cheap per session, and you cut it to the length you need. It is also what athletes know best: buddy taping a sore finger to its neighbour is a well-established way to share the load.

  • Where it shines: available everywhere, fully adjustable, fine for an occasional session.
  • Where it falls short: you redo it before every session, it comes loose with sweat, it leaves glue on your skin, and it goes in the bin afterwards. Over a season, the rolls add up.

2. Hook-and-loop finger bands

Fabric or neoprene bands with a hook-and-loop closure are reusable and simple to put on. Many are designed to hold two fingers together.

  • Where they shine: reusable, quick to fasten, no glue.
  • Where they fall short: in grip sports, the extra thickness and the hook-and-loop closure can get in the way of the gi, the judogi or the ball.

3. Reusable finger straps (Towa)

A Towa strap is a single piece: two rings joined by a bridge. You slide it onto the finger, one ring on each side of the joint, and the bridge keeps the joint supported while you grip. You heat-mold it once so it fits your finger.

  • Where it shines: on in seconds (about 30 seconds for a whole hand), it stays in place until the last round, nothing to stick or cut, washable and reusable session after session.
  • What it asks of you: finding your size (the size guide takes one minute) and heat-molding it once (see the fitting guide).

Which one for your sport?

For grip sports, where your fingers grab fabric or a ball all session, a thin reusable strap that stays in place is usually the most practical choice. See how Towa straps are used in BJJ, judo, grappling and no-gi and rugby, or all sports on the Sports page.

FAQ

Does a reusable strap replace medical care?
No. Towa straps are training gear. For an injury that is already there, with pain, swelling or a finger that does not bend or straighten normally, see a health professional. Our article on jammed fingers explains when to worry.

How long does a Towa strap last?
One set is made to last hundreds of sessions. Wash it with soap and water after training and let it air dry.

1 hand or 2 hands?
The 1-hand set has 4 straps, the 2-hands set has 8.
